I'm thinking of buying Mrs T an e-reader for xmas but dont really know much about them, so thought i'd ask people's experiences/thoughts on them.
She likes to read books but only from certain authors so how easy are they to download, she is a real technophob so it doesnt have to have wifi or anything as i'll just download onto the desktop and transfer them over. On the small amount of research ive done there seems to be backlit screens and e-ink? whatever that is. Price isnt too important but ease of use is BUT we dont know how much she's gonna use it so i dont want to spend lots. Any advice

Ah the eternal question. Im no sure what Mrs. Trem is into, but if she is like all other ladies, well they like them shiney.
I was presented with similar question, mind you for my gf. In the end, i decided to get her the shiniest of shinies, iphone 4. Im somewhat apple-ophobe, and she was techophobe as you would put it, but one thing you have to hand it to apple is that they make pretty things, was good enough for me, she ended up loving it. And now uses pretty much every aspect of it, its not hell of a e-book reader, but it can still be used for that, she does. With that you cant really go wrong. If you want it more of an e-book reader but less of a phone, you still have a large choice of tablets which are also pretty cool and shiney. Galaxy Tablet, Ipad, Htc flyer.... As for the dedicated e-book reader, kindle is pretty much top of the line in my opinion, and when combined with amazone ebooks store, you have it all. Then again, you have B&N Nook, Kobo eReader, Samsung E6. Thats for eInk screens, as for others you have: Notion Ink Adam and B&N Nook Color. Thats what i would recommend to any of my friends, but alas there are some cheaper and not as well known, not really worth the mention. Last edited by battlestar; 11-01-2011 at 08:29 PM. |

I got a Kindle from the wife last Christmas it is e ink so the page looks just like the page of a book as "they" say because it is not back lit it is easier on the eyes. I can get amazon to send books direct to it and would recomend to anyone, i will point out that i do not have experience of other readers.

I got other half a Kindle too.... very easy to use, very large choice of ebooks downloaded straight to the Kindle, either through wireless router, or if you buy the dearer one, via 3G.

Rather than spending almost £100 on a machine that can just e-read I'd highly recommend this:
7" Tablet PC with Capacitive Touchscreen: Powered by Android - Buy your Android Tablet PC from Kogan UK I bought one last week and use Aldiko reader on it and its brilliant. RRP is only £119 as the Australian company sells direct but they have an Ebay store where I only paid £80.
