I have a 58 reg. Peugeot 308 1.4 engine.
Today I had a message on the dashboard screen saying Check Oil Level, it flashed on and off for 10 seconds then disappered. I checked the dipstick and the very end of it showed oil. I went to buy a litre of oil, and intially poured half of this in. I then rechecked the disptick and the oil level had moved to half way up the reading area. The message on the dasboard continued to flash tho.. I poured the rest of the oil in and the dipstick reader then had plenty of oil showing on it but i still got the message on my dashboard. Am i reading the dipstick right or do i just need to put more oil in... Thanks in advance for any help |

There are other threads on the forum of people having similar concerns...the consensus is trust the tried and tested method - dipstick!
The sensors sometimes play up and can report an incorrect level. Good job you didn't just pour more in as too much oil can be very bad for your engine. If it's still under warranty then perhaps get it checked by Peugeot. |

These sensors can work well.... the error flashed up on my 407 today "check oil level", so I did, and it was down below half way from min to max. So topped up with 0.4l of oil, to 3/4 up, and the check was then ok and the error cleared. I have got into the habit of not checking this car as its the first time I've ever put oil in it in the 18 months I've had the car
I almost needed picking up off the floor though when seeing the cost of a 1 litre bottle of oil for this car... £17.99 for the Mobil one suitable for DPF

Mine started aching today.
After routine check on my yard. I noticed that oil was getting low (2/5 of the range on dipstick), so i added a bit so that it was at around half marker between min and max markings. Also pressurised powersteering unit and added some powersteering fluid (from dealer). Later on my wife called and asked if i could pick her up, so i hopped in my car and turned power on. BEEB economy mode. ---> Check OK --> OIL OIL OIL OIL and MFD said check engine oil. At first i cursed that i might have overfilled, so i carefully rolled down from parking lot to more stable ground and checked that car is balanced and waited a good 10-15 minutes without engine running. Dipstick still saying that it is on half marker between min and max. Im guessing i'll start trusting the dipstick instead of car diagnostics Just to make sure i'll stop by at a smaller car mechanic's shop to get a second opinion on this matter. ALSO i think i might as well go for an oil change and get the engine flushed and cleaned properly. Can't hurt, right?EDIT: Or is the 2005 407 2.2l engine keen on warning about oil level when it is not close to max?

Yes.... my 407 likes the oil to be 3/4 to full.... had the warning come up, and when checking it was still 1/3 to 1/2 full, but it wanted topping up

i can remember my 307 had the oil level thing on initial startup...always showed full, never any problems and the oil stayed at the same level all the time...
well anyways, one day i noticed it wasnt doing it anymore, like showing the oil level. i put it down to dealer turning it off or i did when i had planet... in the end i chose not to spend any money and use dipstick.

I think my Peugeot was just acting up out of sillyness.
After a good night sleep, she didin't bother me with any kind of errors or warnings. Started up at -10 degree below perfectly and purred to me like a kitten. Im guessing she had on those days or something :P Checking the levels later on morning coffee break and if its around halfway, i'll add up closer to max marking so that she'll have no reason to yell at me

My '53 Partner 2.0hdi sometimes shows no oil on the oil level sensor when starting but it's a software fault. Normally works ok and never had to add oil between services.
