Default BT or phone engineer wanted

are there any past or present bt engineers or just phone engineers on here who can help with an issue i have with these little boxes on my wall.
we used to be BT customers donkeys years ago and still have a BT box on the wall in the living room,BUT our phone line is supplied by virgin media these days so we have a separate box(further down the same wall) supplying our phone, however there are two wires that seem to link both boxes togeter
1.orange
1.white
and when i disconnect one of them the phones appear to still work ie: dial-tone both downstairs and upstairs.
So can i just disconnect these two wires thus isolating the BT box and allowing me to remove it totally??
any help or advise on this would be great
Neil

im a comms tech in the RAF so i can help a little bit.

without looking or seeing the layout i would say you can get rid of the BT box altogether. the reason being vm and bt use different technology methods to deliver their services. i have heard however vm can deliver their service over bt lines.

one test you are best of doing is disconnect both wires and ring, using your current service, an outside line, who you can talk to, to confirm that you can still hear them and they can hear you. and do the same on the other phone if this is connected to a wall if it is wireless (just power) then dont bother.

i did this at my dads house. he had a sky dish and a bt connection and loads of boxes in the house. using my trade knowledge i went around taking all the cables down and removing the boxes. my next job is to install an internal tv antenna in the loft and trunk it to all bedrooms and living room

i hope this all makes some sense, if not just tell me

Spoke to my mate who works for Virgin media installing. He says that your Virgin box is supplied underground to the house from those green boxes on the street corners (which im sure you know) but the two wires that go from the virgin master box to the other BT box he reckons are to provide the other box as an extension from the master. So if you want rid of the extension takes the wires from the master.

See link for colours and explanation: http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm

Hope it helps.
