Default bogus gumtree adds

i nearly just got caught by a bogus gumtree add for a gsxr600 bike it was mint and half price i got worried when the fella asked for a deposit up front and i couldn't view the bike because he was away working the number he sent me to contact him was 07762571880 he also gave me his ebay user name happy2771
and told me to check his feedback i very nearly sent him £100 deposit but thought it was weird so i googled his phone number and it turns he has done this loads of times before so please beware

I've always made it my resolve to have driven the car before parting with any money. Until you physically touch it, it doesn't exist

Glad you didn't get stung mate, bet it give you a scare like!

well think you did the right thing and thanks for the tip.

Would also mention if getting a bike don't skimp on the clothes get the best out there they can seriously save your body from a world of hurt. I know as i am recovery just now after being realised, the last 4 weeks recoverying in hospital after a very bad crash mate and the clothes and the skill of the surgions and staff in my treatment are the only reason i still have a bloody right foot with other serious injuries being minimised by the gear ?, so please if you get a bike get the gear its in your best interest.

Good luck on the bike search

shit son (as the yanks say), hope you get better "third time".

anyways btt, i was watching a program called Fake Britain and it mentioned gumtree and ebay. basically it said a scam artist...with a middle eastern name was selling prams to pregnant woman for really cheap...anyways after they part with their money, say around £300 on average, and then the items never appeared...obv the seller comes up with excuse after excuse but the items never materialised and neither did the refund.

there's a few other scams ive heard of aswell...but if your carefull your ok. one good 'un is say...i'll go and hire a car for a week with false id, remove any and all stickers and evidence its a hire car. arrange for a buyer to view it at a false address... at someones who i know is out etc. i'll then say i have other viewers so will need a deposit...they give me a few hundred pound and i say ok come back later like in a hour and i will dig out all the paperwork. obv by that time you have got maybe other viewers deposits, drove off with their money and returned the car to the company. i wouldnt say its easy but i seen it on tv on one of those scam shows and it looks far too easy.

Gumtree and Craigslist are now the most common place for scammers.

You should also look out for any sellers who are prepared to come to you because they live in a remote area and feel bad for making you make the trip.

Or someone buying it for a friend or relative who's in the armed forces. They promise to send you more than the asking price for the inconvenice of transporting it or holding on to it while they get back from active duty.

Cheers mate its just time to heal will teach me to stick to 4 wheels instead of two or so the wife tells me just a bit thick but glad to have my 407 there to keep me comapny (got to get some peace from wife and kids lol)

to be honest i have bought a number of things from ebay and it always come back to one thing at the end of the day regardless of where you buy from "COMMON SENCE" sometimes i think we loose it when goin to buy stuff when its the time you should be using it the most be careful always investigate people or places you deal with it does pay off

I've had an email yesterday about my car - saying they'll pay the full sum via PayPal if I just give them a price. If anybody gets any of these, it's a scam.

I googled it, and on the gumtree forums it says that the buyer will ask for a price, and send it via PayPal. However, it comes up in your account as £0.00

Then you get "PayPal" emails saying that they are holding the funds until the item is released. These emails are fakes, and PayPal do not hold funds.

I saw this thread as an avenue to warn other members. Maybe we could make a document or even a thread that warns against car scams whether buying or selling.? I'd take a trip down the suggestion forum but that never gets seen

hahaha would be all to perfect if the british forces didnt have BFPO's for those who are out of area, or their own camp that will hold it in registry or supply (depending on size) untill they got back...not too sure on yanks tho...i do know that yanks at my place have the same system as uk forces.

i can remember i got an email saying something along the lines of a troop of yanks in some squadron or other, who found money in iraq or afghan and wanted me to launder it, by sending my bank details....how stupid do they think i am...i sent a reply mentioning this, also mentioning i am in the forces and i dont find this funny and also that they should mention it to their command cashier so they could spend it on much needed equipment got a reply in some foreign language (i think french) telling me to eff off basically.
