Default Anti Pollution Fault that stops the engine when travelling at speed!!

Hello All,

Thank you in advance for your help and patience as I think this could be a bit long.
I am aware that Anti Pollution faults have been done to death, but this one seems to different to anything I can find from a search of the forums.

I have recently become the owner of a '54 plate 307 SW SE 1.6 HDI (110). The car is great and is just what I wanted apart from this one annoying and very dangerous fault. On several occasions when driving along all of a sudden I hear a beep, the engine fault light comes on, Anti Pollution Fault shows on the central display AND the engine cuts out. All this happens without any warning and on two occasions in the outside lane of a dual carriageway at 70 mph !! The car refuses to start again for about 5-10 mins and when it does it sounds a bit rough (limp mode?). After the two high speed instances I got the car home and left it overnight and when I started it the next morning all was fine, smooth engine and no fault lights. The last time it happened was 2 mins after leaving home. Giving way to other traffic the engine was ticking over as normal when the same happened and I was stranded for 5 mins before restarting.

My local mechanic found a fault code to do with the Particle Filter and suggested an additive in the fuel to see if it would clear it, but was baffled by the engine cutting out. His only idea was to bite the bullet and go to a Peugeot dealership with the proper diagnostic equipment.

Thank you for reading.

Check to see if anyone on here is close to you that has Peugeot Diagnostics first ,
particle filter is a big issue , we can assume you have 80k to 120k on the clock ??

Guess it’s because of poor quality fuel. As the tank gets almost empty have your pug filled up at some other station, plus add proper proportion of injector cleaner additive. There’s a big chance you’re gonna have the situation back to normal…

Thank you for your quick response.

Would like to contact btsimonh for diagnostic as he seems to be just up the road from me. How do I get a message to him as I am a very new member? Will this explain the engine cutting out. Surely this cannot be right due to the dangerous consequences of such an action.

Your assumption is correct, it has just over 90k on the clock.

Regards

Update:-

Managed to get one of the codes that my mechanic read previously (Sealey Code Reader) it was P1586. From looking it up seems to be Throttle control unit Throttle position malfunction. Could this cause the fault and more importantly the engine to shut down without warning?

Regards

ive heard it can turn the engine off in fords...and apparently ford use PSA engines (peugeot). so it may well do that...just a shame a TPS is quite expensive...your best bet is to contact the above who you mentioned for a planet hook up...its better than other diagnostic scanners out there (for peugeots/citroens)
