Default 307 SW Alternator noisy

Hi guys,a newbie here shamlessly registered to dip into the font of knowledge on here, hope that is ok and i am posting on the correct section.I own an 04 307 sw hdi 90,for a while now i have been having a droning sound relative to road speed which i believe is down to the alternator.I have dropped the belt off the car and run it and the noise goes away so i am in the right area.I was going to buy an alternator and be done with it but at circa £180 i want to be sure this is the problem.Could i ask if there is a known problem with this model in this area e.g.alternator berings, idlers noisy, power steering pump etc.Any input greatly appreciated.

I don't know about it being a well known or common problem.

I had exactly the same noise/fault on my Honda Accord last year - cos it was a company motor I just left things be.....right up to the point it left me stranded with a completely flat battery

I won't make that mistake again ......

Fair point mate but my alternator is charging no problemo,i suspect a mechanical issue rather than electrical

Sorry, perhaps I was not clear enough, mine was also charging OK and did so for a few weeks, until the bearings collapsed altogether and prevented it from turning and so from charging...THAT was when the battery ran flat and left me stranded....

The noise was the clue and I ought to have acted on it before I did ...
