What is the empty input next to it used for please?

and what is the funny stubby black thing poking out about halfway along the units rear?

sorry i cant see the photo, work pc block photobucket, flickr etc. but typically:

- plastic or metal with rubber stud in rear, stops the rear of the radio from bouncing around inside the dash.

- one connection will be the harness, for the speakers/power/illumination

- one connection for the aerial

- one connection for output to things such as rear headrest monitors.

- depending on compatability, you may also have a gps antenna connection, tv aerial connection, ipod connection and AUX connection

Thanks John - I just bought a sony Mex-bt3900u and the remote stalk harness - will I still be able to view mpg info on my separate screen?

yeh, your mfd will display everything but radio station and cd track info.
