Default 207 - RD$ head unit, Dension Gateway 100, iPod nano 5G - let the fun begin...

Hi,

OK, I had the DG 100 fitted 1 yr ago to run an iPod nano 2G. Cradle fitted etc. and it was flawless. Just slip the nano 2G into the dock and off you go, no problems whatsoever.

Due to an accident (my 2G nano going through the washing machine ), I decided to purchase a nano 5G, and consequently bought the new iPod Active Cradle, plus insert.

I expected the 5G to do what the 2G did, work flawlessly, which it does but getting it to work is a nightmare.

No longer can I just insert the 5G and play music. As soon as I do so I'm greeted with a "thud...thud...thud..." sound. This matches the display graphic and those little circles in a line which move up then down as the RD4 works out what the hell is going on. Buggered if I do.

I've tried the 5G with the old Active Cradle, and same thing happens.

I seem to have to disconnect the input to the DG 100 after inserting the 5G, then re-insert it having selected Aux 11 (I think). But even then it seems hit and miss.

Does anyone have any experience at all with a 5G nano and the DG100, and can provide a bone-fide way to get it to work as soon as I put it into the cradle and switch on the RD4?

Do I haver to select something on the RD4 first? If so what? With the nano 2G all I did before was put it in the cradle, switch on that was it.

Cheers for any help/advice.

The 5G does work as mentioned - I just have to put the RD4 on Aux 11, then plug in the DG 100 with the nano in the cradle.

The DG effectively takes over the iPod, and I get track info etc. displayed by the RD4. However, I've also got the 5G to work independently of the DG 100 if you see what I mean (change track using the iPod controls).

Bottom line - the 5G does work OK but it's a faff having to disconnect the DG100 input all the time for it to do so. I want the lead to remain connected all the time, just to put the 5G in, turn on the RD4, and off we go (just like the nano 2G).

I know the 5G is a pain because Apple shifted the docking port from the left to the right, hence the new 5G cradle for the DG 100 (it does hold other flavours of the nano too). I'm just wondering whether there are hardware/wiring changes in the 5G which conflict with the DG 100.

I've checked the Dension website and there are updates for various car makes for the DG 100, but none I can see for the 207 (RD4), i.e. I have the latest firmware update.

I will check with Peugeot but I came here first in the hope of avoiding a 10 mile journey to my "local" dealer, and having to fork out for something which is probably trivial.

I Fit a few of these to VW Vans and had an issue with the new vans battery going flat as the dension kept the canbus alive and not allowing it to sleep so i had to wire the red to a +15 (ignition live) but that gave me a similar problem having to reconnect the ipod lead to get it to pick up the ipod but later they decided that mdi needed to be activated in the vehicle via diagnostics so maybe there is a similar thing that needs to be activated in your 207 with pp2000 anyway try giving Peter a call

OK, many thanks for the number. I will try and call Peter later today.

It does sound like there is an issue with the 5G and that possibly something needs to be changed in the DG 100 for it to talk to the iPod properly. It could be, however, that this "problem" can't be solved because of the new 5G spec. I'll search again for a Dension firmware update which may address this issue.

As Dension have brought out a new cradle to accomodate the 5G it must work somehow.

However, one of my concerns is that every now and then (while trying to get the DG 100 to see the iPod) the RD4 goes completely Dalek and I have to switch it off, leave for 2 mins, then switch on again before it settles.

A diagnostic check is probably required but I'm loathe to shell out the money as mentioned. However, it may be a fait accompli in order to get the 5G to work properly.

Many thanks again for your replies.

teerak2UK - OK, I contacted Peter at Dension (his no. is 01420 487110) and he was very helpful. Suggested I did a firmware update via my iPod.

Downloaded the files, transferred them over to the iPod, plugged it in as per instructions and it started to update but stopped. It then chucked the RD4 unit onto the radio station from the aux/GW input.

The iPod screen did change during the so-called update to the Dension screen but things never completed (there was no visial indication on the RD4 head unit).

The DG 100 just doesn't see the iPod nano 5G on any input, and I'm at a complete loss as to why. I'm also baffled by the fact that I have to disconnect the cable from the active cradle then plug it back in for the DG to eventually see the iPod. But as mentioned before, this is a hit and miss procedure in terms of selecting an input channel.

I also get the same result with the old DG active cradle so I'm of the oppinion this is an issue with the 5G itself in terms of programing/electronics.

For info. the new cradle is a Dension IP51CR9 (iPod Active Cradle for Gateway 100).

So, I still get the "thud....thud...thud..." sound when I just connect the iPod nano 5G and switch on, which clearly isn't right.

nige65 - thanks but I really don't want to spend any more money as I forked out quite a lot to get the DG 100 installed. I'm not giving up on the fact that the 5G nano should work flawlessly as did the 2G nano.

Just for info, I've read that during the firmware update the RD4 does default to the tuner. Perhaps I wasn't patient enough waiting for things to finish. However, it didn't look good anyway.....

Please close the thread as the problem has been resolved.

Thank's to Peter's fantastic help and suggestion the DG 100 now controls the iPod nano 5G perfectly, no problems whatsoever. Absolutely superb from him, and many thanks to teerak2uk for putting me in touch with him.
