Hello
Have just bought a late 2006 807 SE diesel, manual gearbox, 2 litre, 136 BHP and 24,000 miles, UK car. Car was serviced at 19,500 miles so a way to go before the next service is due. To complicate matters a little we are at the moment in France at our holiday home, but return home (UK) on Wednesday. I used to mechanic until about 15 years ago so it's all different now. Because I was always told to change diesel oil on a regular basis and having just bought the car I decided to change the engine oil and filter now so that I know what's in it and an oil change never did a diesel any harm. As I was laying under the car looking at the engine drain plug saw a drain plug on the diff housing too. It had a little oil at the plug to diff copper washer joint which I thought was odd having read it is a sealed for life box and not too many miles. Touched the drain plus and it mover ever so slightly! I then tried to turn it and to my horror it started to do up, but only say an 1/8 of a turn. I then tried to unscrew the plug and unscrew it did. Sat looking around the plug area and saw oil traces away from the plug in a couple of places. It then occurred that having driven 650 miles hereat 80 mph what would happen if the plug unscrewed completely, but that didn't bear thinking about. So, unscrewed the plug completely and at the last turn sure enough oil started to come out, and it smelt like gear oil too. I don't have a workshop manual on this vehicle and on a quick look in the now getting dark I couldn't see either a dip stick or a filling/level plug. My main questions are - can anyone describe where the gearbox dipstick/filler/level plug is please? What oil is used in this gearbox? As a secondary question, and I feel stupid asking this, where is the engine oil filter. My guess is under a plastic shield? that is a close fit to the sump? That's not the main under-tray plastic shield. Very, very sorry to write so much, but with Xmas arriving soon it gets more difficult to get something done, and we return to the UK in 3 days time too. VIN removed That's a lot of data isn't it and yes I understand about speedo drive, have to do that with our Fiat van. Just thought there may be a better easier way or even a dipstick as i would really like to know where the level is at the moment so I can guage whether to be happy or upset and soon to be poor. Problem we have is 40km away from nearest large source of vehicle parts (specialised gear oil?) and don't really want to drive that there and back unless I know there's enough gear oil. firstly you may want to delete your vin now
secondly ive * the last 3 of your engine number third heres your cars info from servicebox, i cant immedatly find the filler plug but ill keep looking for you. Thank you I had tried that earlier as it's mentioned in the handbook.
It only states that the gear oil will never need changing but the level should be checked? As there isn't a filler plug it's a case of empty and put the correct amount back in. Phoned a friend from way back who has an MoT businiess and a program on his computer of where and what to do for servicing various vehicles. He came up with the exact position of the drain plug and an approximation of the fliing point. Drain plug is on the base of the diff and the filling point at the top of the gearbox housing, through either the reverse lamp switch or the gearbox breather which are sited close to one another. His recommendation for oil was 78W-80 mineral oil which appeared to him to be old fashioned for a recent design of gearbox. Then phoned another mate from way back who is the manager of a motor factor, he checked all his sources and agreed the gear oil is 75W - 80 mineral and made the same comment about surprised it wasn't synthetic. I now have 1 day to decide on whether to risk driving to the nearest large town to collect some oil or to get a very expensive taxi for a return and wait trip. If there is any other info out there would really appreciate to know, and thank you again trem1 for taking the time. |

The gear oil problem is now resolved.
A neighbour pointed out that there was a Peugeot dealer (Agent) 14 kms away, so promptly phoned them and they immediately agreed to look at the gearbox oil next day at an appointed time. Took it in and they drained the gearbox while I stood and watched, huge sigh of relief to see just any gear oil coming out, and at a guess it was more than 1.5 ltrs, so a potential massive disaster avoided. The boss asked if we had things to do in the village or round about and there was a red car outside for our use to get back to the village, please take it and come back in 30 minutes. They refilled with new oil (Peugeot do list the mineral 75W-80 as correct) with the upshot being a slightly lighter gearbox on the return trip to our house and better engagement of reverse. A little info for you Peugeot people. The oil was 7.86 euros per litre and the labour rate 42.00 euros per hour, both plus tax. The garage charged a half hour which surprised me as they spent at least 45 minutes on it including a road test, is it practice in the UK to charge for less than an hour? They also pointed out an older recall hadn't been attended to by the previous owner, which we will now have done here in France when we bring the car back in February. The help and attention to detail was extremely good, the workshop was very large and well appointed. On first putting the car on the lift the boss took a minute or so to take a look all around the underside of the car which I thought showed interest in the job and care too. Remove the airbox and fill two litres into the gearbox breather. Simple. Use 75w80 gear oil.
