You can take it off, the car wont run and give you endless problems...

It is situated in the middle, with two brake pipe looking like pipes and a wire going in it.. inside the DPF is a bottle like filter with millions of tiny holes which get clogged with the carbon..

In essence, it not really a diy job however you can certainly clean the fiter yourself.. garages use industrial detergents and use jet wash to clean it.. its the re-generating bit which is tricky..

Peugeot are right, you may get away by simply cleaning it.. however the car needs to know that its generated in order to work properly..

Some folk have removed them, disconnected the ELOYS delivery pipe (although leaving the electrical connectors on so the ECU still thinks it's working) and reset the counters with some success. Do some Googling on it.

I don't know and I'm not utterly convinced myself, yet a few 406 and 307 owners have made it work. They say.
