Default ESP / ASR - need help!!

Hi everyone!

I have an ESP/ASR problem on my 2002 607 HDi. An authorized Peugeot workshop serviced my car about two times now regarding this problem and everything is still the same as it was before They simply don't know what the problem could be. They've changed a couple of parts on my car, but the main problem remains unsolved.

This is the thing: When I start the car, everything is normal. The ESP/ASR warning light occurs when I'm driving (speed is not important, sometimes when I'm driving 35 mph, but in most cases it happens on the motorway, when the speed is about 70 mph). All very strange and annoying as the power is dramatically reduced when the warning light is on!!!

Can anyone help with suggestions on the possible problem?

Many thanks.

And another thing, sometimes notice Engine Antipollution System Defective also appears on the "screen". Can this two things be related in any way?

Tnx a lot

If the stealers can't fix it they need to set it up on the modem so the boffins at PSA HQ can check it remotely. I'm not believing in coincidences, so thinking they might be related.

Hi and welcome to the forum

by the sounds of think the car is going in a "limp mode".. driving normal but then suddenly power loss regardless how hard you press the accelerator..

now there is a difference between "authorised dealer" and a dealer who has had training on 607's.. which is very rare..

the problem could be anything from turbo, egr valve, fans etc etc...

The car goes in the "limp mode" aka protection mode to avoid further damage to the components of the car..

This question has been asked many times on the forum.. however you need to start from the simple diagnoses, (in my experience 8 out of 10 times) it has been the fans..

there are two resistors for the radiator fans.. its like a copper coil which gets rusted over the time and then breaks anytime your car hits pot hole.. then it stops working..

First step for you is, start the car and see if the fans go on.. remember there are two fan, ones low speed and the other is high speed.. any one being faulty can cause the problem...

good luck

Thank you very much for your explanation I'm not a native speaker of English and my terminology regarding motoring sucks even in my language

So the deal with my car is that first the warning light ESP /ASR occurs and after a few seconds also another warning on the screen (Engine Antipollution system defective). It just so happens that the screen on the dash starts to darken a few minutes after all these warnings occur and in the end I cannot see anything that is written on the screen, not even what the temperature outside is, not even what radio station I am listening to etc. Could the fans be the main cause to this problem? Any other suggestions?

Many thanks,

Nikky

Hi Nikky,
If a ESP/ASR fault has occured at any stage it should be logged on the
esp ecu as an intermittent fault and any peugeot tec should be able to
see when this fault occured at what speed, rpm, etc
with the last 3 607's with ESP/ASR faults I had it was the steering wheel
angle sensor that was at fault....sometimes if the sensor is recalibrated with planet it can fix it rather than paying £400 for a new one..
maybe go to another dealer for a second opinion....or a few member on here
have also got planet and may help you out if they are close to you...
Ron.

as Ron said, it could be anything..

however in my experience the fault code only direct you to a circuit but not pin point exactly whats wrong..

some codes relate to three or four different components.. which is a nightmare to diagnose sometimes...

Interesting thread .My screen on my 607 same model is very bright and clear when we first start the car and for a while after but gradually fades so that it is difficult to read althougth still there but perfect again when start the next day .
The previous owner told me not to put ESP on. I have a switch next to steering wheel that says ESP OFF and have left it off but consider trying it and see what happens . What are members opinions on this .Scot seems to be so knowlegeable will keep his advice on this thread in mind .

Default Fan resistors

I have a similar problem so want to check out the resistors for the fans as a starting point.

Where do I look for these resistors?

Regards,

Gavin
