Default Checking Autobox Level

I have a 2001 plated V6 auto. Is there a correct proceedure for checking the gearbox oil level.
I used to work for Fords and know their way of doing things, so I am aware that there is a proceedure but as to what it is I am at a loss.
I have found what I think is the level plug (Allen key bolt at the front of the box).
Does the car have to be hot?
Do I have to check the level with the engine running? or if not what gear should it be in.
I have read a previous thread regarding the correct oil which I will get from the stealers.

Any help would be welcome.

Dave

Hi Dave, there isnt anyway to check the level.. as there is no dipstick..

is there any problem with it? I was paranoid when I bought the car, so I simply drained and filled it up with correct oil viscosity but a better oil...

engine running : At a temperature of 55 ± 1 degrees C, open the oil level plug.
Wait for the temperature to reach 60 ± 1 degrees C.
1st possibility :

* The oil flows, the level is correct
* Refit the oil level plug (Tightening torque to 25nm)

2nd possibility :

* The oil does not flow
* Refit the oil level plug
* Add 0.5 litre(s) of oil (Refer to chapter : Refilling)
* Resume the checking procedure for the oil level

Procedure to check oil level on HP20 gearbox.

by the book yes, but why go through all the hassle when changing the oil takes less than 15 minutes..

He only wants to know how to check the level not to change the oil. If he wants it I'll post it up.

Thanks for the info. I assume the box is checked in "P" but should I run through the gears after the engine reaches operating temp?
