This doesn't work on my 406...I have no idea what it is. Looks like it was meant to be a clock but there's already one higher up...

(won't let me link the images so have to do them this way, sorry)

also, the cigarette lighter doesn't work. The fuse is intact, so I'm stumped...

You need to make one more post (need 5) and then you can post working links mate.

Thats what I was thinking too - I don't know what fuse to check though, peugeotlogic.com/fuses/fuses406/fuses1.htm doesn't list it. I'm guessing I'd have to dig deeper to find the problem?

Presumably by "pre-facelift" you mean it's a D8? Then how come it's an HDi, unless someones gone to a lot of trouble over an engine and management transplant? The dashboard is a D8, so it's a very late registered one on a 99 year, and the HDi's management relies heavily on a lot of the multiplex units in the D9's dashbaord, so with that D8 dash that's no HDi.

As for the lighter, obvious thing to check is that the connector on the rear of the socket isn't tarnished up, and is securely pushed home.

*shrug* The vehicle forms say it's 2.0l turbo diesel, and that was the HDi engine...but it's deffo pre-facelift, it doesn't have the body-coloured band through the middle of the rear light clusters, for a start.

Pretty much a spitting image. (edit: clearly, I don't even know my own car. This is clearly NOT my car... see? I'm very capable at being a tit.)

Anyway, I'm assuming you're talking about the cigarette lighter here? What's the best way to get underneath and have a look?

edit: holy hell that's a large image... linked instead of shown.

edit 2: Yup, got the Vehicle registration certificate here. Date of first reg: 04/01/1999. First registered in Isle of Man: 24/05/2001. Peugeot 406 LX HDI Saloon. 1997CC Diesel.

Something not right there. That pic is of a D9 and they did have the stripe across the rear lights and was available with the HD- motor. Your dash is D8 - does yours have the body coloured grille or the later black grille?

The D8 never came with an HDi unit, and had to be significantly re-engineered to accept the uber-complex CANBUS management when it became the D9, hence a new dashboard in the facelift model. An LX it may well be, but it'll be the 1.9TD or the 2.1 12v TD if it's a diesel. Your paperwork is all to cock. A pic of the engine will solve the riddle.

If you're careful you might be able to prise it out from the front, but more likely you need to remove sifficient panelwork to get behind it.

Right, the issue with the paperwork, engine and model is clearly the most pressing here, something isn't right. I have some photos of the engine and the car itself. Fairly big res, so linked instead of just shown.

I may be mistaken about it being pre-facelift - I'm only going by what I know and that's that there's no body coloured stripe across the rear light clusters. But let's not rule out me being a tit. It happens a lot.

4 engine shots, 2 exterior shots.

edit: body coloured grille.

Forgive me, hope I didn't make you panic cos that does indeed appear to be an HDi lump...

And yet...

It is also most definitely a D8.

You have there a car that should not exist, at least theoretically according to Peugeot Servicebox and my own brochure collection.

Might I advise a visit to www.406oc.co.uk to see if the knowledgeable lads there can shed any light on you cars provenance.

BTW, nice looking machine.

No worries, this is indeed a strange thing! Will see if 406oc know anything, thanks for the link.

And it will look better once I finally get round to washing it >_<
