Default Smokey Diesel?

I currently have a '96 406 1.9td and for a little while now shes been smoking more than usual. I always get a cloud of blue when first started which i'm really worried about, but its the black smoke which is concerning me. It smokes badly on acceleration and still smokes if i sit at 1500 - 200rpm in 4th for example. Its never been this bad really so need to start investigating.

Any ideas where to start looking first?

Kind Regards, Ed.

Possible unburnt fuel could be bad diesel or injector problems? Have you tried some additive in your fuel like millers eco max i use it in mine ive 143000 miles an no smoke

I haven't tried anything with it yet, I've lived with it until now but getting quite bad these days. I'll try an addictive to start with and see how that works.

I did think it could be the turbo as the turbo is whining a bit more than it used to, but wouldn't that be blue smoke?? It still pulls well, but just smokes when you put your foot down...

Does blue smoke not mean its burning oil? Also ive cleaned egr valve with a spray cleaner ya just take off flexi hose on air box and spray whilst engine is running

Check the air flow meter and injectors. Bad mixture air and diesel make black smoke.

If its putting out alot of black smoke maybe remove and blank off the vac hoses supplying the egr valve,When i had 110k mls on mine it lost alot of power and bellowed out black smoke...removing the vac hoses to the egr solved the problem..
I still find at times if i drive normally for say 20 mls and then all of a sudden floor it,black smoke can still bellows out....It really p1sses off people driving soft tops...
With the blue smoke i also get it for the first mile or so after startup..not to worried about it as it has 224k mls on the clock..
