hi folks, ta for all advice on sump replacement, got that sorted, only took me a week!
had trouble getting aux belt back on, sorted in end.next question is to do with problem pre cracked sump. a few months ago my 1999 406 1.9dt almost died after timing belt failure (had just literally passed mot incidently) i decided to save car from the brink, i had someone fit complete new head, timing and aux belts. on recieving car back, all was fine except for a rattling noise somewhere under bonnet (not 2 good on pinpointing noises) its like a deep sounding rattle which seems to make the whole interior of car vibrate (pretty noisey) The strange thing is, their is no noise when engine is just ticking over nor when cruising at higher speeds, the noise is only apparent when setting off in lower gears. could it be one of the belts too tight or slack? or maybe the wrong belt altogether? or maybe something else not fitted/tightened correctly? or something completely different? any thoughts, ideas, suggestions very much welcomed! |

That's an interference engine, so the likelyhood is the timing belt failure has bent or damaged at least one valve. Head off job, and should really have been done before belting it up again. With any luck the head itself will be salvageable, but you need to go easy cos that valve(s) is gonna break and drop into the cylinder, then that's well and truly game over
![]() Even if he could see the belt, Mr MOT wouldn't examine is as it's not part of the test.
