Hello chaps
Doing a major service which involves change of fuel filter and pollen filter. Just changed the air filter and was amazed at the difference in response from the engine, I changed it at 25,000 miles as per manual. Anyway, having never changed the fuel filter before, is it a simple job, I believe the system is self bleeding so no worries about air locks in fuel system etc. In the manufacturers box with the new filter and seal there are some plastic pieces, like pipe connectors, what are these for ? Are they to replace existing ones - I havent dismantled the filter housing as yet and wont until I know what to do. The Haynes manual doesnt mention these pieces either and very difficult to follow with b&w photos. Also, can someone tell me how I get the old pollen filter out ? It says theres a bolt/nut I need to remove under the wipers and presumably then the passenger side cover comes off ? Lastly, has anyone tried those oil removal pumps which suck the oil out through thr dipstick and save you having to get underneath and remove the engine guard etc ? Many thanks Andy C |

after having just doing the fuel filter on my car (ford) for the first time in mine and my dads life. we got it wrong, didnt do any damage but i flattened the battery...but after a good long run its back up to full life again and car runs like it can pull a freight train.
i too had difficulty with the B&W pictures and the descriptions arent all that good either. heres a few tips. - wear disposable gloves, it gets messy and diesel can cause exzema. - leave the diesel in the fuel filter housing, you will need it there to get to the system. (top tip from a vosa mech) - the rubber ring gasket needs to be on the seal properly, i went wrong here and let air in - hence all the problems, take your time to make sure its in the recess if there is one. - when you start the car for the first time afterwards expect it to stall again but keep cranking, any more than 10 times for no more than 10secs a peice, check for air getting in (seal). - check local authority for disposal of filter (contains old diesel) - dont want a nasty little fine. - your correct about the self bleeding thing you will more than likely see the old clips, just replace with new...i would. quick question in your haynes does it show the fuel filter housing being a black plastic tube that sits in the engine bay, with 2 pipes and an electrical connection, with a twist top...if it is, will be exactly the same as mine and i can go in more detail on what to do. im not too sure on the others but the info i give is in general so should be still relevant if i think of any more, ill post up. as regards to the suction devices there was a massive debate on here about it, but i'd stick to getting under the car and doing the old way...makes sure you get all the sludge and oil pollutants that diesel cause.

Hi John
For whatever reason I did everything in the service bar the fuel filter as at that point I assume I hadnt had any replies - mine is the 2.0Hdi so there's no elec connections on top of the filter housing, just a pipe entering from the left and leaving from the right. My problem was that I wasn't clear on how to disconnect and reconnect the pipes - there's a little green indent on the connector - have since heard you push them in and it releases although dont know how to reattach it. I now have another problem, just clocked 216,000 miles and I am getting a little judder from the clutch setting off in first or reverse - it was last changed at 138K and I am easy on the clutch, no fast starts etc but I have towed our caravan with it for about 500-600 miles in last year. I am thinking it might be the rear engine mounting, seems to be a weak point. Cheers Andy |
