Default idle problem?

hi , new member.

been out to knowsley safari park today, car is a 1997 406dt 2.1 .

the problem is that without any accelerator the car would drive along at 4/5mph, temparature was showing 90 which i thought was high(15mph speed limit btw)
dip the clutch and everything was ok.

second question for you ,

i have new handbrake cables and new handbrake shoes fitted yet the car barely holds a small slope, recently passed the mot ,i asked the tester about the handbrake which he said was fine?

any help appreciated btw i`m not a mechanic

The car will always pull under it's own steam, I can drop mine in to 4th and it will pull a long at a fair rate without any throttle what so ever, wonderful for slow moving traffic jams! That doesn't sound like an idle issue and is quite normal.

But anyway, what does the car currently idle at?

As for the Handbrake, how far do you have to lift it before it feels like it's engaged?

Phil

the car idles at 800.

the handbrake does engage but even pulling on as far as possible it will still roll.

Sorry I should have been a bit more specific, is that engine warm or cold, A/C on, or off as they all have different idle speeds, but either way, 800 is the idle speed for mine with A/C on.

When you say as far as possible, does it feel like the cable is the restriction or the actual handbrake unit itself?

If your topping the lever out, then it's totally out of adjustment.
