Default fuel gauge issue

Hello, I hope someone can help. I bought my 406 2.0 HDI 2001 only yesterday and the guy I bought it off said I needed fuel as I had to get from weymouth to southampton. But as i drove back the gauge rose to half a tank. Just before I reached southampton it ran out of fuel. Does anyone know if there is a quick fix for this. I had a little look, there is a possible water leak into the drivers footwell and the battery doesnt seem to hold a charge overnight. Also there are two amber lights on the dash and having no owners manual I am unsure what they are. One is an amber car with what looks like a square cut-out where the boot is. The other is what looks like an amber seat-belt warning light but with the side airbag next to it? I would be most grateful if someone could enlighten on this.
