fault codes

Hi .. Peugeot 406 HDI (90) 1999 ..I got the orange engine symbol on the dash about a month ago after running low on fuel (not sure if theres a connection),,the engine symbol is steady and stays on all the time..A friend had a very cheap diagnostic tool that connected only once that gave 2 fault codes P220 & 380..the tool could not clear the fault light...The car runs fine without a problem..I know that i should go to a gararge and have a proper diagnostic done,and i will , but do you think i am doing any damage in the mean time..Thanks anybody
