Elm327 Bluetooth

Hi
The other day i noticed there was an OBD port in my car right by the steering wheel so decided to buy an Elm327 1.4. I checked on the internet to see if this will work but the info is very conflicting.
Has any one had any experience with these gadgets?
is there a risk to my ECU screwing up and will android torque actually work?

I've tried various scanners in the past with varying results, sometimes they work, sometimes the don't. They will also just give you generic codes. Save a bit more cash and get the lexia interface off ebay for around £100
