Wink Do I need a new alternator?

Hi everyone, am new on here and dont have much knowledge so bear with me! Ive got a 406 glx hdi 110,000 with 134000 on the clock.

I noticed a while ago that when my engine starts from cold it has a rattle and the lights will all flicker but as soon as the engine has warmed up the problems stop. (will try and record it tomorrow if it does it)
I had a mechanic out who said its more than likely the alternator but he didnt test it very well, just started car and disconnected battery with all electrics running and said the lights seem a bit dim.

I would rather have a more definate answer considering the price hes quoting for a new alternator!

Thanks guys

How long between starting and flickering to being 'warm' and not flickering are we talking here?

ive gotta say he was a bit stupid disconnecting the battery while the engine was running...does he not realise how much amps are running through it!!! for example 1 amp can kill! i have 105 amps running in my car!

sounds to me the alternator is fine, maybe the battery will need replacing and the drive belt replaced...but im going more towards belt.

lol he was an idiot, trying to get me to part with over £300 without a proper diagnostic!!

The belt was replaced about a year ago but the guy that done it hasnt alligned it properly so its not fully on the pulley by a few notches. Could it be this maybe?

Thanks

i think you may have just answered your own question

your best bet maybe is to go to a recommended branded garage in the area to double check for you. alternator and battery tests are free at most places anyways.

Question

Hi again!!

Just been on YouTube to find a vid of a failed crankshaft pulley and the noise is very similar to what I'm getting! Would this be a likely suspect to cause the symptoms I am getting?

Cheers
Phill
