Clutch noise confusion

406 glx estate 2ltr petrol!! 89000 miles. Had a knocking noise, which have had checked out with nothing found!! So I have my window open, listening to see if I can pin point where it's coming from!! Put my clutch down while stopped, hear only what I can describe as a puff of air this happened for 2 days, then the next day nothing!! It was even making it with the engine off! Have looked online, so thought it was a clutch bearing, but would have thought it would have made the noise all the time!! Anyone know if this is the case??
