Is the automatic transmission decent?

I see an occasional 406 for sale over here with the auto trans option. They're pretty rare though, we frenchies generally only like manual trans.

Anybody have any experience with a 406 diesel motor and auto trans combination? How many cogs are in the auto gearbox? Does it work well together? Or does it, to be blunt, suck?

I've been told that in a 605 with the 2.5td, the auto trans works poorly and robs the car of much of its appeal.

Any opinions? Thanks!

Hmmmm, deafening silence. Perhaps that auto trans is also rare in the rest of yurrup.
