Hey Guys,
A friend called round earlier. He has a 2000 V plate 406 110 HDI. It dies on him , literally , on the motorway and he had to coast into the hard shoulder. Started cranking the engine and nothing so he disconnected the battery and waited 5 minutes. It then started and he drove it to mine. Put it on planet and it gave a 'DIESEL HIGH PRESSURE MONITORING FUNCTION - LACK OF PRESSURE' and 'DIESEL PRESSURE REGULATOR OPEN CIRCUIT/SHORT CIRCUIT TO EARTH' Also 2 permanent faults , 1 pre heat and 1 fan relay. None of the faults gave a 'P' code to reference?! Cleared all but the 2 permanent faults but started fine and he drove off. Called me 15 minutes and 10 miles later to say the car had died and would not now re start. Plugged planet in again and the 2 permanent faults are there along with the other 2 mentioned , cleared all but the permanent faults (wont clear) but the car still refuses to start. No pulse/power to the injectors so teh RAC guy told him it 'was definitely the crank sensor' but its showing around 400 ohms which I believe to be a sensible resistance? The real diagnostics start Friday ( after a sabatical to Scarbrough tomorrow ) but any help / pointers would be most appreciated As an aside planet did not list a vin number down the left hand side as it normally does and I cant see an option to re code a key , its like it doesnt recognise the car ecu ?? but can read the faults

What condition is the fuel filter ?
Could be losing pressure in fuel pump worn seals if not correct pressure to injectors diesel wont start.

Nige , the filter is not the cleanest shall we say! I was told about a bit of gauze in the end of the HP fuel pump that craps up and can stop the diesel?
Martin , is the valve on the HP fuel pump? I thought it strange that there was no power to the injectors so I was looking more electrical than fuel. Hes changing the crank sensor today while im away so il let you know what the outcome is.

And the correct answer was.............................
Tank mounted low pressure fuel pump. £75 pattern part . As an aside had a Vauxhall Zafira yesterday with a brake switch warning on the dash and brake lights stuck on. Changed switch still the same. Four hours later turned out to be a bad connection on the engine fuse board , however also a bad connection at a wiring junction in the n/s/r inner wing fuse board. I hate cars sometimes
