Cool 2000 w reg 406 clicks and stalls

hi i have a 406 90 hd turbo diesel. the car starts and drives fine most of the time. sometimes however i will here a loud clicking noise from the engine when it starts clicking it loses throttle but will come back again a couple seconds laterand will not be clicking but then after a few seconds to a couple minutes it will completly cut out. i then have to roll to a stop, remove key from ignition lock and then unlock it start and go again. sometimes though it may not go and i have to lock unlock again. the engine light comes on and it only does this while driving. i travel an hour and half to work each day and same back, sometimes it will go days and not do it and the engine light will have gone out. there again it has also done it 5 times on one trip to work before. could i have a foult with crank/cam sensors?
if anyone can help me with any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
