Hi Guys,
My 406 died on me today in truro To be honest i have only done 4 miles in it since i purchased it from a scrap yard for £300 with a full mot. Its mot is due to run out in nov and im wondering if it is going to be a worthy investment in repair.. It has only done 110000 miles for a s (1998) reg and is in pretty tidy condition After doing some miles i found that it was very ill responsive, extremely smokey after booting it to get a slow ill acceleration, whilst going through truro i heard a ping and the engine has dropped dead. Cam belt is in decent intact condition however it does seem to be slack. The day before it died the negative terminal from the battery had became disconnected, i discovered this after pulling over to see why the engine was making a loud slapping sound after cutting off the engine it died completely. Any responses and ideas would be nice. this is just a repair project in the meantime so im not worried if it has to go back to the scrap yard.

You mention timing belt is a bit slack,it could have jumped a tooth.Thats what happened to my Partner.Loads of smoke no power, and eventually would not start. Most of the cam followers broke,as they break to to save valves bending. You could take of your cam cover and have a look in there.
