Question Worth fixing ?

I've just been "given" (well, I had to pay £50 but that is basically a gift at that price) a 1995 Peugeot 405 Mi16 Le Mans 2.0.

Sounds good, but it isn't, really!

Problems:

Left engine mount has gave way (it's bad, trust me, the engine is being held up by an axle stand outside my house, without the stand the oil sump is almost touching the ground)

Starter motor won't engage (I'm told the engine does run though!)

Hand brake goes all the way up with no tension (cable has either snapped or came out of the holder - common problem with 405's for some reason)

Paint on the roof is more sunburnt than me on a summers day!

Alternator belt is "missing"

Not that great eh ?

But at £50 I thought I'd buy it, since there isn't many Mi16's left these days.

Do you guys think it was a good buy, or should I have kept well clear with those problems ?

Well worth it for an Mi16 and not lots of work.
Starter may just need a clean I've had two pugs from around that time and starter motors either stuck on or wouldn't engage just cleaned both times and fine after that.
Sometimes the old bangers (not that an Mi16 is a banger probably more a classic) are better and more reliable than newer cars. For last two years I've been driving around in a 1998 vauxhall combo I paid £130 for, It's been so good I've since bought a V reg one for £50 and am currently doing it up.

Cris.

Well I'm going to replace the engine mount, alternator belt and starter motor tomorrow and try to fire it up.

If it runs, great, I'll restore it to new condition and drive it. If it doesn't, it's going in the paper as Spares/Repairs!

Provided there are no other hidden nasties, you'll get that back running an MOT'd for £250, and have a superb handling, very rare and historically significant saloon.

The cosmetic stuff you can do while you're using the car, a kind of rolling resto.

Provided you're inclined to go to the effort I'd say it's well worth it indeed.

Right, over two months later, I have an update...

Yes, just one update

I've been really busy, but I did manage to do one repair... And it was the engine mount of course!

Simply because I wanted to hear that 2.0 motor fire into life, if it did...

Well, it did, and it ran great, until white smoke started pouring out of the exhaust and the temperature needle got nearer and nearer the hot mark.

I shut it down before it overheated, and didn't touch it again.

That was 2 weeks ago.

Today my head gasket and timing belt kit came through the post from the internet, so whenever I get a spare couple of hours I'll get the motor running like brand new again

Oh my God... I own one of 7 MI16's on the road!

I think I'll make time tomorrow morning to change that head gasket!
