I have a Peugeot 405 GTX Estate Petrol 2.0 (1995)with a few strange electrical problems that has caused it to fail its MOT as the lights are playing up. The dipped beams do not work at the front on both sides. The rear near side lamp does not work. Reverse lights do not work. Main beam is OK. Side lights are OK. Brake lights are OK. Indicators are OK. All bulbs have been tested and changed where appropriate. Is there a good place to start fault finding this problem ? As its a reliable car that I would like to keep using for a few more years. Is there any common faults for these cars that I could check first? Thanks for reading. Cheers, Simon.

If the bulbs are ok then I'd start looking at the earths on each corner of the car. I'd break each one, clean it back to white metal, rebuild it and smear it in Vaseline (don't use grease) to protect it.
Reverse lights could also be the switch, but they're not part of the MOT test so it's more for your convenience, although Con and Use regs require them.

Hi, had similar prob with headlights and horn on our m reg 405 td, (intermittent and strange operation) turned out to be loose earth connection in offside engine bay exactly as chopper has suggested.
Excellent choice of vehicle you have. |
