Default 1991 SRi 1.9 salon, transmission (gearbox) failure

I have a:
Engine: DKZ (XU9JAZ)
KW: 89, DIN 90 (121 HP)
BDK 2
Manual shift, 5 gear

I don't have the precise technical terms, so I will try to describe the problem.

Connected to the gear stick is a shaft going forward, horizontally and top most, that must? connect to the gears?

The shaft has disconnected at the other end, in the gears so to say. I haven't had time yet to take a closer look, so any one know if this can be done without taking out the whole gearbox?

Also, I've found a Hayes 405 .pdf manual, but of course, it is missing the chapters 6-8, the ones I would need. I don't have high hopes of fixing something like this, but I feel I need to try before giving up. So, any tips/info for the missing chapters is highly appreciated.

I've found instructions how to dismantle the center console. Until then, it's impossible to see far enough, but it certainly does look like it might be possible to fix it from inside the car. We'll see.

I think you're describing the linkage? It's common for them to wear and fail. Miles Horne was selling uber gorgeous custom made stainless ones.

That's the term I was looking for. It looks like it could be stainless inside the cab, but when it exits in the engine compartment, I don't know what it is, have to get rid of all the oil, grease and dirt first.

I've finally located the failure. It is a ball-joint that is dislocated, that is, it has popped off the ball. The failed ball-joint sits at one end of a partly threaded rod, the other end of the rod is also a ball-joint. This ball-joint is still intact, connected to the linkage side of the engine.

Say I manage to attach a new ball-joint where it is supposed to be, how likely is it that the linkage then is connected to the correct gear in relation to the shift stick?
