Default Towing with a 1.6HDi

Hi,

I have a 308 1.6HDi (90BHP).

Does anyone have any experience of towing a caravan with this vehicle/engine?

The caravan is quite lightweight (1049kg MIRO).

My gut feeling is that the car is under powered, but, would appreciate the feedback form anyone who has got experience.

Cheers

Thats a similar weight to a standard sort of car. And as its a Diesel its got plenty of torque which is what you'll need for towing. Have towed heavier cars in lighter cars before no problem but thats not really quite the same as towing a caravan. I imagine you'll be ok but don't quote me on it.

But on another note you've brought up a question from me. Whats with all the weird combinations of engines/bhp.
Can somebody explain this to me? When I first read 1.6 hdi 90bhp I thought the OP had made a mistake as I have a 2.0 hdi (which i also thought was 90bhp).
Now I just looked at parkers, I was under the impression there were two flavours of 2.0 hdi and they were 90/110 bhp. The difference between the two being an intercooler.

But at that same time they were also making 1.6 hdi's that got the same power? I'm really confused here, why did they do that?
And also, whats the 136bhp version all about? Intercooler plus sporty mapping?

Unfortunately that hasn't helped. According to that my car was never made, lol. Just wondering the difference between the 110 and 136 but I'm guessing from betty's response that 136 can be had from mapping.

My main concern with mapping is fuel economy, how badly does it end up affecting economy.

Sorry mate if you have a 90 then you would be looking at 110 after map , fuel usually stays the same or gets better, but you will notice better torque through the gears.

Yeah I thought that.
What I meant was is the difference between the official 90 and 110 just the fact that the 110 has an intercooler and the difference between the 110 and the 136 is to do with the mapping(and obviously the same intercooler again).

Hence if I get a phat front mount IC and map it, i could then see up round 140bhp? then maybe a little boost increase cause i'll then have lower intake temps and then 150ish? Maybe a bit of an overestimate. But it would be nice if thats all needed to get a big boost on my BHP and the fuel wouldn't significantly go down (getting even better sounds great!). I've seen your youtube power curves from your 1.4 and I am impressed, I notice at the moment my mapping is very similar to your original in that it peaks quickly and then drops off towards higher revs, the post map looks miles more like it.

After that, hmmm, gotta find another 50 or so bhp from somewhere. Bigger turbo maybe?

I thought the 110 was a 1.6 and the 136 was a 2.0 engine?

The 90 only has 19 ft lb less torque than the 110, so it shouldn't be too bad. Indeed, the softer power delivery might be beneficial.
