rear break disc's - (Details)

I think the sticky on this issue is locked.
(Thus I posted here)

I took off the rear wheel and there was a star spanner slot there -
(Do I need to go near that?)


Also the Brake Piston Caliper tool - do I need any particular one?
Will this one do?

Any help will be much appreciated.

(I hear grinding when I drive now! (LOL - time for a fix!)

the wind back tool for your rear brake caliper is an anti clockwise one, you can pick one up in Halfords,if you undo the packaging carefully,use it,wipe it off,then put it back,you can take it back. So its a free use of the tool. but to answer that one in your link will work fine.

The `star spanner` to remove the disc is a Torx screw.
You might, if you`re lucky, get away with an allen key if it`s not too tight, but if it chews up you`ll have more stress to deal with getting the remains out...

I just recently did all four discs and was dreading the rear wind-back (wind up?) calipers after reading about them but they were easy - a couple of turns with some pipe pliers to get them going (i put some silicon grease under the rubber boot lip to prevent them from turning too) and then they wound back in a few turns by twisting with a pair of long-nosed pliers in the piston grooves.
It only takes a few rotations of the piston to get it all the way back - rotate piston, push it in, rotate piston, push it in, etc,etc..

oh btw, my pistons wound back clockwise. (2002 3071.4 hdi)

OK so funny story!

I went into Halfords and asked for a torx spanner connection.
After a grunt getting his boss to help me
The manager said: What torx do you want.
I said: A male one!
He said: err a T40, 50, 55 or 60
I said: 15 mil I think!
He said: err they don't work like that!!

(So I got out my fork and started eating idiot pie!)

So guess what my next question is??

You guessed it......
Which Torx spanner is needed. a T50,55,60 etc.
And it is a male one right?

If you've got a tool kit with a selection of screwdriver bits, check these first.... most come with a range of torx bits
And if you haven't got them, they are cheap enough to get.... but don't go in Halfords asking questions like that or you'll come out with no end of expensive kit that you really didn't want/need

And its not a torx spanner, and male hasn't got anything to do with it - its just a variation of a screwdriver

Oh -
I was looking at something like this- (See attachment)
But they were sold separately and €8 each - (that connected onto a socket set)

I don't have a set A.T.M. -
I work in PC repair and would have a T7, 8, 9 10 & 11

If anyone know the T number that fits that should save me buying 5 or 6 different ones until I get a fix.
I meant to say socket not spanner- (my bad)

I will buy the whole set in time but at the moment don't have the money to do so... :-(

Yes, those are the ones. If you look on ebay.... you can buy them for less than £1 each, and there are even some sets of 6 for less than £2

As you've quoted € I'm not sure where you are though?

I'll have another look at the car tomorow and see what I come up with.

I was looking in a haynes manual -

For changing the pads do I even need to use the Torx socket?
Or just the 13 and 15mm normal spanner?

I was under the impression this torx bit is needed if you're removing the discs - isn't there 1, maybe 2, located around the disc near the wheel nut holes? If this is the only location, then you won't need to worry about them if only replacing the pads, as you don't remove the discs.

Yea there is.
But from the looks of my car the 13mm nut is almost rounded-
To a garage for them to change and put in a better nut I think -
Unless anyone has suggestions-
