Fuel gauge goes a bit crazy

Hi all

My recently acquired 03 307 110 HDi gives the correct fuel reading most of the time but every now and again it reads more fuel than I have. After nearly filling up the needle even went past the full leve and went over the bezel.

Is this common and is it more likely to be the gauge rather than the sender?

sounds like the gauge to me. could not see a sender unit being able to over read. if you have pp2000 this might flag up a code for the instrment pannel.
