Stiff Clutch

Have just bought a 1999 1.8 Merdian 306 and have realised that it has a very very stiff clutch pedal...just wondering if this is a common problem or a fault with the 306's?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Mine started to get stiff and not come back up fully when the cable started to become frayed.... eventually the cable wore through and snapped. End result, clutch straight to the floor and stalled at first junction. Check the travel in and out is working fully.
