Have an R reg Peugeot 306. When starting the car cold, car makes funny humming noise and then as it starts both dials go up to the same place and then they reset to normal (speedo goes to about 100MPH and rev counter to about 5000 revs). Have tried disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours but problem still continues. Anyone got any ideas?

are you letting the car do its start up checks and glow plugs thing ...if it does that... before you start the engine...
also when was the last time it has been in and had a full service?

yes allowing it to do all checks before trying to start, some times it won't start at all, take a couple of attempts. Just had service and MOT but this only happens when car cold. i.e. first thing in the morning...

I'd say some type of voltage regulator/resistor as well
Is resistance highest or lowest when cold, i'm inclined to say lowest so more current will be passing through a faulty component when cold? Or am i barking up a very random tree here!?
