Starting and idle problems

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I am posting on behalf of a work colleague as he doesn't do well with computers!!
He has a 306 meridian 1.6 petrol which doesn't like to start via the starter - it just keeps turning but not firing. It normally results in the car being bump started which works but just isn't practical.

When running, the idle is either very erratic or at the best case is rising and falling.

He was advised that it could be the stepper motor, which he has replaced but this made no difference.

If anybody has any ideas, i woiuld be most appreciative
