Default Speedometer drive pinion broken

Hi all, i have a 95' 306 1.4 with a mechanical speedo cable. The speedometer has stopped working and i know the cable is ok because twisting it from the gearbox side makes the needle move. I removed the speed sensor on the gearbox to inspect the drive cog and this is fine but the internal pinion spins freely and doesn't seem to be attatched to the diff properly. Haynes manual says this is a gearbox out/specialist jobby but i was wondering if anyone has any ideas? (The pinion is non removable from the gearbox from what i can see unlike on larger engined models.)
