Seat belt replacement...

The rear passenger side seat belt, on my 1999 306 estate, is not retracting, once pulled out it stays out. I've taken the panel off and I can wind it back on by hand but there is no pull from the mechanism. Looks like I need to fit a replacement one. They seem quite a bit of money and oddly enough the only cheapish ones i've found are from the drivers side. Are they handed or will a drivers side one fit just as well on the passenger side?
Also has anyone removed a seat belt, I just wondered how easy it was going to be, does nayone know a site that shows pictures of how to do it?
