pug 306 1.9xnd ticking noise (driving me nuts)

hi could any1 please give me sum ideas as to what could b causing the ticking tapping noise which sounds like it is coming from the back of my engine really need 2 keep this car on the road is my third 1 in a year so cant afford 2 buy another car lol 1 wrote off by another kind motorist and 1 totall engine failure on motorway and not worth it 2 repair only had this 1 for a short time so sum help would b great and very much appreciated (dont fancy 50 mile commute a day on public transport lol ) car is a standard 1.9d non turbo on a 98 r reg

Check the alternator belt tensioner. They start making alot of noise when they are failing.
