Default Over heating

I have a Peugeot 306 Meridian 1999 that keeps overheating. The temperature gauge goes past the red once it is up to speed. I have taken it to a mechanic and they have replaced the fan switch and the thermostat but I still have the problem. They said that it could be the head gasket that's gone but said there is no evidence of this. Any ideas what else could be causing this?

Cheers

i had the same problem on my old ph2 306 i cleared the problem by taken the top off the expansion tank and making a funnel from a lemonade bottle start the engine and let it heat up the water will come up the funnel as the car gets hotter when the thermostat opens it will drop make sure your heater in the car is off and switched to hot as if you dont make the funnel big enough it will over flow either that or buy a big funnel,, if that doesnt solve your problem keep an eye on your water in the expansion tank if your forever topping it up you have a head gasket problem which means the water is going into the cylinder and not the oil

Thanks nige55. They flushed the radiator when they replaced the fan switch and the thermostat and there was a small airlock which is now cleared but I still have the problem.
