Newbie, Problem with ABS

Just a quick hi to everyone as a newbie here.....
but as I am here....a problem to solve.
My 2001 (Y) 306 HDI estate has a problem with the ABS system. The warning light comes on and stays on when I start up. I want to do a check on the sensors but can't seem to get them off, started with the front right. Removed the weather cover and then the long thin bolt which I thought held it to the axle....gave it a very soft tap with a mallet but it didn't move.....
How do you get them off ?
Can you do a resistance check by removing the plug from the unit in the engine bay...?

Yes you can other wise if you remove it the sensor will probably break.

Any idea which pins are which. ?? is there a diagram around that you know of.
