Will the front headlights and side lights out of a phase 2 306 fit in a phase 1 306 without any hassle?

Don't see why not. Wiring may be a bit different.

Weren't the phase 1 lights fairly 'square' and the 2 and 3 lights more rounded??

The phase 2 and 3 ones though are a single unit for headlight and indicator, so won't fit a phase 1
