Default Fitting wiring for towbar, ??

I've fitted a towbar onto my V reg 306 Merrdian estate. Looking at the rear light cluster there are 5 wires going into it, for the 3 bulbs. Each wire goes into a socket numbered from 1 to 5. Does someone know which number relates to which light? The colours do not match the wires on the towbar..On my last car I just removed the wires one by one to see what they did but this time I'd hoped to avoid doing that as it leaves the wiring a bit messy..
Regards
Gary

Five wires:
- indicator
- tail light
- brake light (dual bulb, but 2 wires obviously)
- reverse
- earth

I've looked in the Haynes manual and it only lists the colours of the connectors unfortunately and not the colours of the wires (they do in other Haynes manuals but not the 306 it appears)

Are you not able to trace the wires back from the holder to the connector to find the right ones?

Not that easily.. the brake and side light are on the same bulb. It may be that i'll have to strip some wire and test it to see. I've searched the internet, best I can, and can't find an answer to which number relates to which light.

Okay, that was not very successfull.. I had it so the side lights worked and the left indictor, but when I connected the brakes and tried everything again, it all went wrong, the indicator did both the idicator and the left side light, both flashing.... and the brakes never came on, then the side lights didn't work.. Anyway in the end I've decided as it's an old towbar with old wiring from a scrap car, i'm going to replce the towbar wiring as I have a new one in the garage. I won't start that today though..
