306 Running problems

hi folks just putting up this post on behalf of a friend,

he has a 306 hdi 2001 model recently it has been running weird just randomly cutting out then when you try and restart the car it just keeps churning and wont start but when you take the key out and put it back in it starts and runs for another few minutes.

doesn't matter if the car is warm or cold some times it will drive for half an hour sometimes it will drive for 5 minutes not sure what the problem could be.

anybody any ideas?

also forgot to mention when you turn the key off it continues to run for a couple seconds not sure if this is normal or not.
