Default 306 rev-counter

My daughters 306 1.4 petrol has a few gremlins that need sorting so im after help/advice on where to start looking as we dont have a manual/wiring diagram for it.
this particular issue is with the rev-counter which only works sometimes.
Any idea's what is the cause of this and more importantly how to solve it

Not sure about pugs, but many cars use a feed off the alternator.

apparently the 306's dont take their revs from the alternator. it is suppose to get the revs from a sensor in the bellhousing...well thats what these guys are saying:

My Peugeot 306 revcounter doesn't work.

sensor in the bellhousing has got to be crank position sensor, which would make sense. It'll pick up a signal from the flywheel so that's the area you need to look in.Will be a simple magnetic sensor with 1 / 2 wires to it and a couple of little bolts.

That sounds about right. My brother bought a 306 with an intermittent rev counter. We thought it might be some kind of cable like the speedo but it was a sensor.
