maybe it just needs new filters and an oil change. Is it idling ok?

Not sure where it is, but look into the EGR valve - these should only work when the engine is warm, and should close-off when idling, pulling off, and accelerating hard.... sounds possibly feasible to me. On the other hand, haven't a clue where it is on the 306 I'm afraid

I'm not sure, but I think his is non-turbo. He's never mentioned turbo.

Is the EGR valve on the pre HDI models? Another "thought" is that I'm near positive that the 1.9 diesel engines aren't HDI.

By all means everything I said there could be wrong.

EGR valves appear to have been fitted to dozens of cars for many years. I maybe wrong, but I think nearly all modern diesels have them, petrols can have them too. Not wanting to promote other sites, but http://www.wanapart.co.uk/product_in...aign=fuelparts shows the EGR valve for the 1.9D

Nice one. From what I remember, filters are cheap, and easy to do.

Make sure you change the oil or there's no point in changing the filter
