306 gearbox compatability

Hi all,
I have a 'S' reg peugeot 306 1.6L petrol (standard base model), the gearbox has just gone and i'm trying to save as much money as possible with the repairs.

It seems the diesel gearboxes for the 1.9xnd and others are generally cheaper on ebay than the correct models, does anyone know of a list of compatible gearboxes that would fit my car? and if so would the ratios be ridiculous? i have to do a lot of motorway driving you see. Ideally i'd like to find one where 70mph is around 2500revs, because at the moment its more like 3600 and its just eating my fuel away
