306 Exterior trim fixings

Hi,
Im new here and have a question im hoping someone can help with about a the wifes 306.
She recently had the drivers door trim strip partly removed and i need to re fix it, i have removed it fully and have new fixing clips but for the life of me i cannot get it back on, all lines up perfect but the clips just keep breaking the harder i try to push it on? Tried washing up liquid, still cant get it to push home? Any ideas or should i use different clips that have more give??
