as not to attract unwanted attention

here the norm are anything that beeps or flashes means that there are something beeing protected.. ie. the less beeps etc. the better

i could ask why did peugeot come up with the flashing? i can hear the door locks plenty for me to determine that i did indeed lock the car, but that is not the most important factor

i think it is for people who are short of hearing, who cant hear the locks, to know if there car is locked/unlocked...and you can tell from a distance. i couldnt hear my 307 locking or unlocking, same for my new focus :P if it wasn't for the indicators i wouldnt know if it was locked/unlocked and my hearing is very good...

I haven`t seen the option to disable this feature when i`m going through Peugeot planet, you might want to consider buying a Lada nobody going to break into that.
