Exclamation Backfiring

Hi my partner and I had a peugeot 206 on a 54 plate we were so happy with this car I never understood why we let it go.We have recently returned to peugeot (10)days ago.We purchased a 207 millisim on a 60 plate. The car appeared a good one we road tested it checked over just about every control feature and were happy with what we found. This has now changed having had the car ten days I today found myself back at the dealers with yet another problem. The car is backfiring when we apply the throttle, it is ok when idling and fine when driving along however come to a junction drop a gear look for a bit of power to advance and crack the car backfires. The noise is coming from the rear of the exhaust and having demonstrated this to a technician at peugeot this morning I was shocked to be told they had encountered two or three cars with the same problem and that having consulted peugeot technical there is no remedy (peugeot are putting down to the new european emissions ).I pointed out that this is not normal or expected from a car that is only six months old and covered no more than 5,000 miles and if peugeot are aware then surely they have the anwser NO I then asked if the problem lay within the exhaust (not allowing the gasses to flow quick enoungh and causing the backfire) would the answer not be to apply a larger bored exhaust. This may correct the problem however peugeot must come to this conclussion because if I change the exhaust I invalidate my warranty.. Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so what cure did peugeot come up with ??? Buyers beware obviously an ongoing problem with this model and if you are thinking of purchasing make sure you give the car a good bit of throttle 5/6 times and listen carefully to the rear end.I am now afraid this will only get worse and more frequent and louder as the car gets older. Will keep you all informed and thanks for any pending replies

It'll be one of 2 things, neither likely to be really gnarly:

1) Some kind of overfuelling, and when conditions are right the unburned fuel is igniting in the exhaust.

2) An exhaust leak, air is getting in, heating up and igniting, and taking any unburned fuel with it.

Give them a reasonable number of days to rectify the problem, or you'll reject it.

I had to reject my 1st 3008 46 days after we collected it due a litany of faults, and apart from the DVLA delaying the whole process while they sorted the cherished transfer, it went smoothly. Don't put up with a car unfirt for purpose, and don;t get sidetracked with any talk of this being a common problem (or otherwise) - your sole objective should now to be get it fixed, or replaced.

Arrange with the dealer for the car to go in to be fixed. 3 goes is considered an acceptable number of attempts. Put them on notice in writing that after the 3rd attempt (I'm assuming they've had at least one go already) if the fault is still there you will take the view that the vehicle is unfirt for purpose and not of merchantable quality and you will reject it as such.

Don't argue with them, don't go off on a tangent arguing about how common it is, or arguing about replacing the exhausts etc - serve them with the letter, with clear timescales and dates, and cc PSA and your finance company. If the result you want isn't forthcoming, then take it in, chuck the keys at them, and stop the DD to the finance firm (and tell them why, of course).

Anything else, grumbling, complaining, writing to watchdog etc is just a waste of time. Do as I suggest, and set it in motion TODAY and one way or the other you will get what you want. It is now up to you and you alone to stick to your guns and get it sorted, or waste your time canvassing the opinions and experiences of other 207 owners and not get it sorted as you fiddle while Rome burns.
