207 1.6hdi 90, poor gearshift quality 5th to 4th

Hi

My 207 gearshift is not great, very spongy but I can cope with it apart from sometime when I change down from 5th to 4th the gearlever just seems to not want to go across the gate & down into 4th, it just almost jams up. It does not do this everytime of course but its dangerous when it does happen as you are stuck with your foot on the clutch wiggling a gearlever that doesnot want to go anywhere, eventuly it goes back into 5th & you can try again, either this happens quickly or I have signal & pull into the side of the road !!!
Any ideas what the problem is ?

mine was similar but do select , (but not as direct as id like them tbh) i changed my linkage and the plastic houseing was broke ok my gearbox causeing crapy changes
